COLDEST NIGHT of the YEAR
CFUW's team again took part in this fund-raiser for Metro's work with the unhoused. We were pleased to raise over $700 for this valuable work. Thank you to all who came out to walk and all who contributed. See photo below.
SPRING FIELD TRIP
On March 28th the Out and About Group toured UBCO campus. Several members of the group tried out bussing there and back. The tour focussed in part on the Engineering Building and the efforts that UBCO is participating in to encourage girls in the sciences, particularly engineering, when they are at a younger age. We started at the “14 Not Forgotten” Memorial which is just east of the Engineering (EME) building and commemorates the women killed in the Ecole Polytechnique massacre as well as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. We were also able to meet Madison, the first recipient of our new awards for 3rd or 4th year Engineering students. She is currently in 4th year doing Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on biomedical. She has worked on HVAC systems looking at air flow in health sciences settings like hospitals and has also been working on developing a better cervical collar. The tour then progressed to see the site of a new building which will be focussed on interdisciplinary collaboration and is supported by local First Nations. Following that we saw the soccer field area which is slated to be a new Recreation Center for the students, as well as the current athletic and gymnasium building. We wrapped up the formal tour in the courtyard and some members continued on to see “Picnic” which provides free breakfasts and is a food bank to support the nutritional needs of students. See photos below.
ADOPT-A-ROAD CLEAN-UP
Our spring road clean up is scheduled for Thursday, April 11th - save the date! We meet at 9:30am at Parkinson Rec Centre, parking on the south side of the parking lot. Safety vests, reachers, and bags are provided by the city. Please bring gloves.
Mark your 2024 calendar now with the dates of CFUW's BC Council AGM and Conference in Nanaimo, May 3 - 5, and CFUW National's AGM and Conference in Edmonton, July 22 - 24. Both events will be well worth attending.
