ADVOCACY & COMMUNITY
CFUW encourages its members to use their education and expertise to bring about change, with particular reference to women’s issues such as violence against women, early learning and child care, quality education, economic prosperity and the empowerment of women as leaders and decision-makers.
CFUW also works on a global level for the adoption and implementation of international agreements that will protect and benefit all women and girls. CFUW holds special consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC) and regularly sends a delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
Over the years, CFUW has taken a stand on innumerable social issues based on our policies (i.e. adopted resolutions). See below for some current initiatives we support.
Below you will find a link to the UN's 17 Sustainable Goals for Development.

- We started Friends of the Library and members have served on its board
- We started Project Literacy, served as board members and volunteered as tutors
- We have contracted for over 20 years with the City of Kelowna as partners in the Adopt-a-Road program (see photos at bottom of some of the volunteers)
- We advocated for water conservation and recycling long before civic programs were begun
CFUW Kelowna's own International Project
CFUW Kelowna began a project to donate money to Bakhita Primary School in Balaka, Malawi, Africa in 2006. A member of our club had been working in the country and told of the work of the school and we have been supporting them ever since. Because the funds are sent directly to the headmistress of the school, all funds are used for students or for equipment to help in the classroom. The full cost of one year per student is about C$85 and the money is spread to help as many as possible. This has exceeded 20 girls per year who would have had to drop out without our help. Some have also gone on to secondary school.
The program has raised over $26,000 since it started in 2006. This year's donations totalled $1,700 alone. A worthwhile project.
